Entertainment Bravura PerformancesThe Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, located in the heart of central Wollongong, is the region's major venue for the performing arts. The centre's comprehensive program encompasses a wide selection of in-house, local and touring productions featuring opera, drama, musicals, comedy, ballet and concert performances. The Merrigong Theatre Company is the centre's own theatrical staging company. Its highly acclaimed productions are of an exceedingly high standard and usually play to sellout audiences. Nevertheless,last minute enquiries can often result in the purchase of excellent seats for a show. Treading the Boards Wollongong is blessed with a good selection of local amateur theatre groups, which add a lot of zest to the regions performing arts. These companies attract large followings of local and out-of-town devotees. Apart from presenting world renowned plays and musicals, repertoires often feature the work of highly talented local playwrights. Numerous hotels and clubs in the region also offer a broad range of top-line entertainment. WIN Sports & Entertainment CentreThe WIN Sports & Entertainment Centre is the venue for large-scale sporting, entertainment, exhibition, conference and recreational activities. It is also home to the Wollongong Hawks, the region's successful professional basketball team. WIN Stadium is also the homeground to the St George Illawarra Dragons Rugby League team & the National Soccer League former champions, the Wollongong Wolves. The entertainment centre lives up to its name by regularly staging concerts by internationally famous performers. True Aussie Flavour The Yallah Woolshed offers unique entertainment based on an Australian country theme. Located only twenty minutes south of the city, the licensed restaurant and entertainment venue boasts a large dance floor, ideal for barn dancing as well as the hugely popular line dancing. The venue is a refurbished drying shed and wool store, with its decor based on an interesting collection of shearing memorabilia and antique farming equipment. A Paradise for Movie Lovers For pure escapism you can't beat the movies! Choose from the large selection of films screening at any of the city's excellent cinemas. The Gala twin cinema and the Hoyts multi-screen complex are both located in Warrawong, a few kilometres south of the city.
