Itinerary 2 - Wollongong to the Botanic Gardens / Mt Keira / Mt Kembla
On and Around Tourist Route 11

The beautiful Belmore BasinWollongong has the most magnificent backdrop provided by the Illawarra escarpment, which reveals panoramic vistas of the city and coastline. Nestled at the base of Mt. Keira is the Wollongong Botanic Gardens, just three kilometres from the city centre, and adjacent to the University of Wollongong. The garden provides 27 hectares of undulating land. Highlights include the sunken rose garden, woodland garden, and plants representing a range of communities. There is a free guided walk on the first Sunday of each month. A short distance from the garden we join Mt Keira Road on our ascent to Mt Keira Summit Park. The park provides all facilities including restaurant and picnic grounds, and of course the best photographic opportunities.

Harry Graham Drive (road currently under repair) links Mt Keira to Mt Kembla; a historic mining village. The easy drive across the mountain top allows vantage points for coastal views along the way to this picturesque village only minutes from the heart of the city. Mt Kembla retains its charm with a 100 year old village pub, and the characters that go with it. Descending Mt Kembla we join the Princes Highway at Unanderra, a departure point for the Cockatoo Run, the Illawarra & Southern Highlands Scenic Railway. A great days experience, a train trip with all the trimmings. As the train climbs the Illawarra Escarpment from the coast to the Southern Highlands, experience spectacular coastal & rainforest scenery. The volunteer train buffs on the Cockatoo Run will make sure you enjoy yourself. Bring your own picnic lunch or get off at Robertson pub (home of Babe).

Please note: Harry Graham Drive is closed until further notice due to road repair.
