Wollongong Central The beautiful Belmore Basin area is, without a doubt, one of the finest scenic vistas in the Wollongong region. Unique to Belmore Basin are two lighthouses, one fully operational and the other serving as a monument to maritime past. The harbour was once the primary freight route for the region, exporting raw coal to Sydney and receiving produce and general merchandise for the local market.Today, Wollongong Harbour is home to a substantial commercial fishing fleet as well as various sailing craft, diving and fishing charter boats and ship repair operations. Fortifying the Harbour Immediately adjacent to the lighthouse on Flagstaff Hill are two major pieces of artillery used to fortify the harbour in the 1890's. A gun pit, together with an access tunnel, chambers for ammunition storage and quarters for the gun crew, were excavated beneath the headland. Nowadays, the park is a popular attracton boasting excellent picnic and sightseeing facilities. A heritage walk provides a guided history of the harbour since its inception. Your Choice of Fresh FishWollongong has a substantial fishing fleet that has operated from Wollongong Harbour for many years. The local waters are known to yield a large variety of quality seafood including prawns, Balmain bugs, gemfish, flathead, snapper, kingfish and John Dory. Choose from the excellent selection of fresh seafood available at the local fish market, or venture into one of the cafés and restaurants that abound the harbour. There are many opportunities for fishing enthusiasts to cast a line along the breakwater. The more adventurous may wish to charter a boat to fish deeper waters off the coast. >> Part Two - Heart and Soul of the City Top of Page |
