Wollongong Central
Part Three - Magnificent Rainforest Paradise

Magnificent Rainforest ParadiseA scenic drive links Mount Keira to Mount Kembla. Along the way pockets of lush rainforest abound with rich and exotic vegetation including fungi of all colours, ferns, such as the birds-nest fern, cling precariously to high tree branches and rock ledges, while giant vines and strangler gigs ensnare rocks and tree trunks like massive pythons. Beautiful Illawarra flame trees got the rainforest during December, their brilliant scarlet bells carpeting the forest floor below.

All Creatures Great and Small

The Illawarra region supports a remarkable variety of wildlife. Unfortunately, as most of the animal inhabitants of the bushland are nocturnal, they are seldom seen by bushwalkers. The scrub land and forests between Mount Keira and Mount Kembla play host to many marsupials such as wallabies, wombats, platypi, echidnas, possums, flying foxes and bandicoots.

Amazing GardensBirdlife in this region is also diverse, with bushwalkers around Mount Keira occasionally glimpsing the magnificent and solitary lyrebird. The distinctive cries of whip birds and the raucous laughter of kookaburras frequently interrupt the stillness of the forests. In dense scrub along the mountain ridge, walkers may stumble across the unique nest of the satin bower bird, decorated with blue objects in order to attract a mate. Rosellas, galahs, cockatoos and lorikeets are so prolific that they often visit the city gardens.

A Garden of Wonder

Wollongong's picturesque Botanic Garden is ideal for those who enjoy less energetic pursuits or who like to take the time to enjoy nature at its best. The garden features a wide range of native plants, as well as plants from temperate climates throughout the world. Major attractions include a formal rose garden and duck pond complete with rotunda and Japanese bridge.

Beautiful FlowersThe discovery centre, located within the garden, regularly presents innovative and highly entertaining programs. Activities are based on a horticultural theme and target both adults and children. Professional guided tours are also available on request.

Our outstanding gardens and natural areas within the region include the Rhododendron Gardens at Mount Pleasant, Puckeys Estate at Fairy Meadow, mount Keira Summit Park, Grevillea Park at Bulli, and the Pioneer Park Rose Garden located in the heart of Wollongong's central business district. Floral festivals are also held each spring and autumn to celebrate the beauty of flowers.
