Wollongong South
Part One - Popular Port of Call

Lake IllawarraPort Kembla Harbour is a bustling maritime complex which incorporates Bluescope Steel's ore handling and steel loading facilities, export coal berth, general cargo handling plus grain handling and fertiliser terminals.

Visitors are able to drive around the harbour to see it in operation. Don't miss the Bluescope Steel's steel coil and slab loading docks in the inner harbour and Gateway Jetty where fertiliser, ore, timber and general cargo are loaded. Close by is the Gabriella memorial. This valiant little ship survived hurricane conditions off the coast only to capsize after unloading a vital 400 tonne piece of Bluescope Steel equipment.

Popular Port of CallOuter Harbour

The outer harbour is accessed by driving south, past Bluescope Steel's research centre. Here you will find the outer harbour tug berths. Also nearby are the acid loading berth, small boat harbour and launch ramp, the historic steam crane and the Port Kembla Breakwater Battery War Museum located within an old observation tower. This area is also the base for customs agents and the water police.

Place of Reflection

The Nan Tien Temple at Berkeley is the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere. This magnificent structure maintains the traditional architectural features of ancient Chinese palaces. The temple's beauty is not out of place in Wollongong with its strong emphasis on cultural diversity. The complex serves as a multi-functional cultural centre and place of worship. Visitors are very welcome and can choose to have an extended stay or simply partake in a traditional Buddhist vegetarian meal.
