This natural wonderland is a top spot for fishing, prawning, boating, windsurfing and yachting. The Illawarra Yacht Club is located on it's shores. The lake is also a sanctuary for many species of wildlife. Pelicans can be found in large numbers. Black swans and wading birds such as swamp hens, egrets, herons and spoonbills are also regular inhabitants. Scenic Mountain Railway Climb the escarpment and venture into the hinterland on Cockatoo Run. This unique rail experience allows passengers to relax in fully restored train carriages and view the spectacular scenery as it ventures into the Southern Highlands. Tea and refreshments are served in the buffet car. Offshore Islands The Five Islands off Port Kembla provide a sanctuary for local wildlife. Pelicans breed here in quite large colonies. Seabirds are also numerous, the largest being the huge Wandering Albatross which hunts the local waters each spring for cuttlefish, its favourite food. Mutton birds nest on the islands, and although many people associate penguins with the Antarctic, they are occasionally seen in Wollongong. >> Part Three - Surf, Sand and Sun Top of Page |
